Genna Chanelle Hayes is an AACTA, ARIA and ADG–nominated Australian filmmaker whose work spans Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia.
Her storytelling draws from lived experience — her own and that of those closest to her — and is anchored in two enduring themes: culture and healing. Across documentary and narrative forms, she crafts intimate, visually arresting work that explores identity, legacy and resilience.
Her forthcoming body of work, The Herstory Slate, marks a defining new chapter — a curated slate centred on female testimony, amplifying women’s voices through bold, cinematic storytelling.
A nominee of Westpac 100 Women of Influence and recognised in human rights defender Diane MacDonald’s 50 Positively Remarkable People, Genna’s work sits at the intersection of artistic vision and cultural impact.

The Free Woman Movement is a content creation campaign led by Australian filmmaker and humanitarian Genna Chanelle Hayes to enhance understanding of the female experience in the world and encourage the creation of a future where all women live freely in parity with men.
The Movement is particularly passionate about eliminating gender-based violence and nurturing self-determination among women and girls, thereby increasing emotional intelligence, financial literacy, female leadership and access to higher education.
The campaign pairs high- quality, wide-reaching films with strong partnerships and peaceful advocacy while being driven by audience participation.
The movement will be circular in structure, meaning profits made through the release of the films will be re-directed toward new projects to sustain necessary Change when it comes to elevating women and girls globally.
